America and Americans Must Change Direction Now
America and Americans have only themselves to blame for the contempt in which they are sadly held by most other people on this planet. Recently we have witnessed what any reasonable person could see was a revenge killing, aided and abetted by America, and not a due process worthy of what used to be the Land of the Free. There is no point dwelling on Saddam's execution, save to say that he is the only person who appears to have comported himself with any dignity in the affair. What is at issue is why Americans now behave the way they do. Sure, there always has been the element of those "Damn Yankees" with their loud voices and unstoppable confidence. Nothing wrong with the former, as that is simply an American "quirk", and quite amusing in small doses. And nothing wrong with the latter, provided it is based on firm ground.

However, in recent years American confidence has been founded on sand, which is in danger of turning to quicksand. Americans pollute more, waste more and generally show greater disrespect for the environment than any other race in history. America's foreign policy is in tatters, as evidenced by Iraq and Afghanistan. And the reason is simple: an  unfounded over-confidence which has resulted in knee-jerk reactions, and not the level-headed consideration which most European governments (with the notable, but not exclusive, exception of Tony "Poodle" Blair's) would have accorded the same problems.

So why have Americans ended up with such duff leaders as those presently in office? First of all, the sad truth is that a majority of Americans (even though a slim majority) voted them into office, although at the same time it has to be said that in reality many Democrat politicians will now continue to support Bush's inept foreign policies. My baseline contention is that Americans have lost their way - entirely, and possibly terminally. Pervasive greed, excessive consumerism, moral decadence, paranoia about foreigners in general, and Muslims in particular, all these things have led to a serious warping in the character of the average American. And if you seriously warp character, you warp society in general.

Any society based substantially on personal gain above all else is doomed. Consideration for others is vital. And not just consideration for close family members, but respect for others in your own country and abroad, and their different ways of life. Let's face it, the American "model" (even though now fatally tainted) is, and never has been, the only one. I saw Britain change, and for the worse, after Maggie Thatcher came to power, and imposed American-style "values". Her desire was always that Britain should become the 51st state. What she failed to recognize is that Britain and America are two countries separated by a common language. The British people had always been know for their politeness and consideration, but not now. Rudeness, loutishness and arrogance are now a way of life for far too many.

And now I see the same thing happening in France, where there have been many changes compared with just ten years ago. I recall one incident well, when I attended a political rally in a small Gascogne town. After the meeting, I spoke with the deputy mayor, who also happened to be my doctor. I remarked on how I felt the life of a Gascon paysan was remarkably wholesome, and he turned to me with an almost horrified look saying "but we must drag them out of that life, and into the modern world". Why, I thought, change what is good (most of these so-called "peasants" live to a ripe old age) for something (consumerism) that in the end tends to make most people unhappier as the apparent need to get more and more "stuff" becomes the overriding objective in life!

America's overriding consumerism has also destabilised the world's economy, as ever increasing deficits have placed the dollar in a precarious position, from which it will likely never recover. At the end of the day, no amount of clever financial engineering, through the sometime-soon ready-to-explode derivatives market, will rid us of the dangerous imbalances that now exist.

How can the American mentality be put back on course, or is it too late? Well, until and if Americans change, by balancing their lives and lifestyles between reasonable consumerism [title for another article?] and concern for others, they will continue to elect leaders like those dumbheads currently in office. So in the end nothing will change unless that happens, and America's foreign policies will continue to place the world in general in even greater danger than it is now. The rest of us can only pray for a miracle.

It is amazing how America has changed for the worse. Given the many marketing and business degrees that have been thrown at america's young it's no wonder everything is getting screwed up.. I live in an area where the main intersection has 4 pharmacies. Why do I need four pharmacys????There was two shopping strip centers with grocery ,liquer and pharmacys and a few nice authentic resturants that we patronized regularly. That was fine. All about in one year time destruction began on the corners and guess what the the buildings were torn down a fresh pharmacys built on each corner. Ididn't realize all drug stores didnt sellthe same drugs.....The do and the prices are not far from each other to even make a househould assett. In the process the new buildings took out two good non plastic resturants in their place where I used to go. Got four drug stores there now and they are all the same. This is just very poor insight on our leadership in this area. One area of america looks like the next and it is a crying shame....why go anywhere we are a hopeless homonogized melting pot now that tastes and looks like the same crap from sea to shining sea in just a few hundred years.Shame Shame... Our food is all processed, portioned crap that neither looks or tastes good or gives much real nutrition. That Tipilia fish that seems so everpresent on the menues that folks are gobbling everywhere. That is a shit eating fish that cod shit is it;s primary source of food and kept in tanks until they are big enough to sell and freeze .
    The New America
I look prople all the time that are at least 30 to 100 lbs. overweight and waddling around. My America growing up was none of this and unfortunately will most likely never get that way again. Where a regular guy could get a good meal and go see a ball game for less than a week gross pay.
Even that ...is that really the life. I doub't it. I for one would like to have less regulation and no property tax on the first homestead so when you get old and do not have income you may still be able to keep your house without hassles from the govt. Most folks have enough personal hassle in their life to not worry about the next latest scheme from the powers that be to get more in your back pocket. Its is legalized extortion as the corp. lobbiests really run the policy that will make laws to help them supposeely make shit jobs for their constituients and dress it up and make all happy with the shoddy homes ,services, and plastic food franchises sold in the area.
There are no real parks in the area so we can relax with nature on days when we want to get out of our little plastic houses to venture out.Real Estate is just too valuable to make nice public parks from that all can use...instead developers make these coursesprivate so only special people can enjoy what it has to offer. Sometimes two and three nice ones of them down here, But it dosent offer all a chance .
I would submit special days be set aside for other non golf activities such as archery golf, rifle golf, paintball. etcthis would allow a greater majority of people to use the pretty land and get to enjoy it.I pay for my golf club but do not use it. I would not mind riding bikes along side viewing the special scenery but that is frowned upon and not allowed....un until it gets dark and I pop my wide 225hp quietly modified golf cart to make the roundsat 120 mph around the fairways playing lasertag paintball with my bros. Our goal is to leave the course as we had found it and most times we do. Many courses do not even know we were there as there were no digs in the grass or greens as we use special tires with respect tecquniques. It is fun...guess one has to make their own fun when one can as these golf courses are taking formerland where parks would have been in the past. Need places to go as the common m,an is being scueeqed out of every other place around. It is a shure dismal state of times we are living in these days. But got to make the best out of it by..........
Anyway just a few personal rants...Let me know what you think of them?
    Peace out
