Bush presidency "worst in history", says Carter

Former US president Jimmy Carter unleashed a torrent of criticism against George Bush and Tony Blair over the weekend, in which he accused the Bush presidency of being the "worst in history" and said Mr Blair's support had been abominable and subservient. Even for a former politician with a reputation for plain talking, Mr Carter's blazing criticism had the Republican leadership responding in equally harsh measure. The White House spokesman yesterday called Mr Carter "increasingly irrelevant", adding that his "reckless personal criticism is out there". In a newspaper interview, Mr Carter said of the Bush years: "I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, this administration has been the worst in history."

Virginia Tech Massacre

In the wake of the massacre at Virginia Tech, familiar questions are being asked: why does this keep happening? And why does it happen so often in America? Time was that appearing in a newspaper for doing something dreadful was a fearful prospect. But Americans appear to have eschewed the old distinction between fame and infamy for the all-embracing concept of "celebrity", and that all that counts is being noticed.

McCain vows to fix world's view of the 'ugly American'

John McCain, formerly the leading Republican presidential contender, has told The Sunday Telegraph that restoring America's sullied reputation abroad will be "a top priority" if he wins the White House. The Arizona senator, an Iraq war hawk, was talking aboard the revived Straight Talk Express - the vehicle that made his name during the 2000 presidential election and that he hopes will revive his faltering fortunes this time round.

Once the most beloved country in the world, the US is now the most hated

'Whisper of how I'm yearning", sang George M Cohan in one of the great American songs of nostalgia, "to mingle with the old time throng". Well, I'm yearning too, not for the gang at 42nd Street exactly, but for the America that Cohan was indirectly hymning - for the Idea of America, with a capital I, which once made the United States not just the most potent of all the nations but genuinely the most liked. Perhaps, with a future new president already champing at the bit, we are about to witness its rebirth. As a foreigner I am immune to the rivalries or seductions of American party politics, but I have loved the old place for 60 years, and I simply pray for an American leader to give us back its baraka, as the Arabs say - nothing to do with religion or economics or power or even ideology, but the gift of being at once blessed and blessing.

America and Americans Must Change Direction Now

America and Americans have only themselves to blame for the contempt in which they are sadly held by most other people on this planet. Recently we have witnessed what any reasonable person could see was a revenge killing, aided and abetted by America, and not a due process worthy of what used to be the Land of the Free.

Masturbation to be eliminated in new Bush initiative

According to www.whitehouse.org, the self-titled "Officious Website of President George W. Bush" the President is to introduce an ambitious new phase in the fight to preserve all that is decent in America. Conceived and championed by the revered Republican think tank Americans for Purity, "Operation Infinite Purity" is dedicated to the complete eradication of masturbation from American soil by the year 2008. Masturbation is more dangerous than atheism. Doctors of a generation ago knew this, but over the course of recent Democratic administrations, and their prevailing philosophy of "if it feels good, do it" – this problem has spiralled out of control. Myth: There are bigger problems than masturbation, like drugs and AIDS. Reality: Experts estimate that there are at least 150,000 Americans masturbating RIGHT NOW! Masturbation costs American businesses at least $3.14 billion in lost productivity every month.
